The Sandwich Stall at the English Market

The Sandwich Stall

The Sandwich stall has been a staple in the English Market for over 18 years, attracting customers working in Cork city, from office blocks to high-street shops, all of whom come for quick, fresh and healthy lunch. Open Mondays to Saturdays, from 8.30am to 4pm.

It all started 12 years ago when Jenny-Rose Clarke was working at The Real Olive Company stall which she co-owns with her partner Toby Simmonds. It is there that Jenny-Rose was often asked by customers if she could make them a sandwich with the delicious Mediterranean ingredients on offer. But due to a lack of space, this was not so simple. So when the stall directly around the corner from The Olive Stall became vacant, Jenny-Rose saw the perfect opportunity to expand the business, and she opening The Sandwich Stall.

Jenny-Rose created a menu packed full of exciting ingredients, including The Real Olive Company’s range of cured meats, cheeses, sundried tomatoes, olives and pestos. Toby and Jenny-Rose own Toons Bridge Dairy near Macroom where they use fresh local raw cow and sheep milk to produce cheeses such as Mozzarella, Smoked Scamorza, Cacciocavallo, and Ricotta, all of which make an appearance at the Sandwich Stall. From freshly baked Arbutus Bread to mixed leaves from Horizon Farm of Kinsale, and from the English Market’s O’Mahonys Butchers to Ardsallagh goat’s cheese, The Sandwich Stall prides itself on using high quality local ingredients. Freshly ground The Golden Bean coffee is available at the stall from early, as well as a range of tasty cakes, soup of the day and a vegetarian Chana Masala curry.

The sandwich stall day starts early, as all the salads and sandwiches are prepared freshly on the stall every morning. If you take a wander through the English Market before lunch, you will see the Sandwich Stall staff chopping, cooking and assembling ahead of the rush. The Sandwich Stall’s main trade is takeaway, but there is also a limited amount of seating at the stall, which provides a fantastic spot from which to enjoy the busy Market atmosphere. By 3pm, all the sandwiches are consistently sold out, and preparations starts from scratch again the next day.
